Behind the Design:
Romantic Classic Literature

A Holiday Story Inspired by Little Women, Pride & Prejudice, and the Beauty of Simplicity

Some designs begin with a single aesthetic. This one began with a feeling,  the warm, nostalgic world of romantic classic literature. The client wanted a holiday space that felt soft, traditional, candlelit, and full of heart. Immediately, my mind went to the pages of Alcott and Austen: sisterhood, quiet joy, handwritten letters, windowpanes glowing with winter light, and holiday scenes built from simple, meaningful materials.

This design became a love letter to that world,  a holiday environment inspired by Little Women and Pride & Prejudice, where beauty is found in simplicity, tradition, and the small details that make a home feel cherished.

A Holiday Scene Rooted in Story, Not Spectacle

In classic literature, holiday décor was never extravagant. It was thoughtful, handmade, and deeply personal. Pinecones gathered from the yard. Cinnamon sticks tied with ribbon. Orange slices drying by the fire. Cranberries strung by hand. Fruit sugared for the table. Candles flickering in the window.

This design embraced that simplicity, but elevated it.

We blended rustic with shine, new with old, and tradition with refinement to create a holiday environment that felt:

  • warm

  • romantic

  • nostalgic

  • literary

  • and beautifully understated

The result was a holiday space that felt like stepping into a scene from a beloved novel — cinematic, cozy, and full of heart.

The Inspiration: Sisterhood, Candlelight, and Winter Windows

The inspiration collage for this project includes:

  • the March sisters gathered together

  • girls reading by candlelight

  • windowpanes glowing with winter warmth

  • orange slices in garlands

  • sugared fruit

  • cranberries and pinecones

  • handwritten letters

  • quiet moments of longing and love

  • simple holiday tables

  • rustic ribbons and natural textures

These images guided every design decision, not to recreate a movie set, but to capture the feeling of those scenes.

This is the essence of my work:

I take your passion, your nostalgia, your dream, and translate it into something sophisticated and holiday‑ready.

Why Vintage Matters in a Romantic Literary Design

DSC02752.jpg

Vintage pieces are essential in a design like this. They give the space soul, history, and authenticity, the feeling that the décor has lived in the home for decades.

For this project, I sourced:

  • 100+ antique windowpanes from D&K Vintage and Antiques

  • Stacks of old books from flea markets, vintage shops, and the Long Beach Antique Market

  • Rare Tarzan books rescued from the Edgar Rice Burroughs museum fire

  • Weathered frames, rustic boxes, and candleholders with age and patina

These treasures cost only a few dollars each, but they added immeasurable depth to the design.

Vintage pieces:

  • tie the entire narrative together

  • make the theme felt everywhere your eyes land

  • prevent the décor from feeling “matchy” or staged

  • create talking points for holiday gatherings

  • make the design feel lived‑in, warm, and authentic

This is why my work feels different from a standard red‑and‑gold Christmas tree. I tell your story, fully, cohesively, and with meaning.

A Holiday World Built from Texture, Warmth, and Story

DSC02836.jpg

To bring this romantic literary vision to life, I layered:

  • pinecones, cinnamon, and dried orange slices

  • sugared fruit and cranberries

  • velvet ribbons and rustic twine

  • antique books and windowpanes

  • candlelight and warm winter glow

  • natural greens mixed with soft metallics

  • vintage accents blended with refined holiday elements

The final design felt like stepping into a winter chapter of Little Women, warm, nostalgic, and beautifully understated, yet elevated enough to feel luxurious and cinematic.
